A renewed congressional effort to ban U.S. transfers of cluster weapons could be one casualty of Congress’s inability to agree on spending bills ahead of a looming government shutdown.Led by Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., a bipartisan group of House members are pushing an amendment to the annual defense appropriations bill that would ban the transfer of cluster munitions to all countries. The effort comes as the United States has been transferring such weapons to Ukraine, following a controversial decision by President Joe Biden in July. While the House Rules Committee was slated to vote to advance the defense spending bill on Wednesday, House Republicans put those plans on hold because they did not have the votes to pass it in its current form. The bill must make it through the Rules Committee before individual amendments can be voted on. And even as Congress has to pass 12 funding bills before the next fiscal year begins on October 1, House Republicans this we...Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate votes to oust state’s nonpartisan election chief ahead of 2024 presidential race

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — This year’s marine heat waves and spiking ocean temperatures foretell big changes in the future for some of the largest fish in the sea, such as sharks, tunas and swordfish. The rising temperatures of the oceans are especially dangerous for these fish because warming makes their open-water habitats less suitable, scientists who study the species said. Loss of habitat could largely remove some of the most important predators — and some of the most commercially important seafood species — from the ocean. One recent study, from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, predicts that some large species could lose 70% of their habitat by 2100. It’s a sign that this year’s high temperatures aren’t an anomaly but a warning about what the ocean’s future could hold with climate change. Species of large fish such as marlin and skipjack live in areas that are among the fastest warming ocean regions, projected to increase by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degr...Sergio Pérez says he received personal apology from Red Bull boss over heritage comments

SINGAPORE (AP) — Sergio Pérez said Thursday he received a personal apology from Red Bull boss Helmut Marko over comments Marko made suggesting his heritage was to blame for inconsistent results on the track. In comments last week on ServusTV, an Austrian broadcaster that is part of the Red Bull group, Marko described Pérez as “South American” and indicated that could explain a lack of focus or inconsistency. Pérez is from Mexico, which is generally considered part of North or Central America.Marko issued a public apology Friday via ServusTV for what he called his “offensive remark” and said he had been wrong to link Pérez’s results to his cultural heritage. As Red Bull’s motorsport adviser, 80-year-old former F1 driver Marko is an influential presence at Red Bull and its second team, AlphaTauri.“I got an apology from him, a direct apology, which to me was the most important one,” Pérez told British broadcaster Sky Sports ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend. “I ...Acusan a Hunter Biden de cargos relacionados con armas

San Diego State sees No. 16 Oregon State as an opportunity to revisit some recent Aztecs history and topple a Pac-12 team. The Aztecs are more than 24-point underdogs against the Beavers on Saturday in Corvallis. Oregon State is San Diego State’s second straight Pac-12 opponent this season following a 35-10 loss at home to UCLA last weekend. But while San Diego State (2-1) has lost to its last three Pac-12 foes, the team can still look back to 2021 for encouragement, when the Aztecs beat Arizona and Utah in back-to-back nonconference games.“(We) take it as a challenge and just show up and play,” senior defensive lineman Garrett Fountain said. “We have to play our game and if we play to the standards that we hold for ourselves, then we have the ability to make things happen.”Overall, San Diego State is 7-5 against the Pac-12 since 2016. The game could be a precursor of what’s to come.
